Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Design

As part of the Barcelona trip, we visited the Museum of Contemporary Design MACBA. What was truly inspiring about this gallery was the architecture and design, which is the best piece of artistic design I saw. The buildings modernist style was designed by Richard Meier and partners between 1987 and 1995. The style is very simplistic, using only whites for the walls, yet bold black typography to clearly indicate the name of each exhibit. The ramps, balconies, chairs were all created from standard square like shapes, with cylinder poles running down the side. The large windows down the one side lit up the inside perfectly, although it had a very cold feeling due to the overwhelming amount of white. What I could imagine though was the inside having a effect caused by the outside. For example, a red sky sunset casting a faint orange glow on the walls, giving the building a life.

The artwork in this building unfortunately didn't have much impact on me. It was over packed with too much photography, which after a while, began to become tiresome. There was also a lack of moving image, interaction design.

One piece that did get my full attention was a video piece by Josep Clanchet called Transformation of an Olympic city edited in 1992. I couldn't find an example of this to show, but the concept was of locations of Barcelona city being filmed at different periods over a ten year span, edited together using transition masks to show the incredible changes made to develop Barcelona into an Olympic city. The music and pace of the video reminded me of the rhythm and the city briefs from last year, and how beautiful the changes in this world can be.

What was also impressive was to see examples of Lewis W Hind photography. His photographs of the creation of the empire state building are famous for showing workers unsupported at the top of building, many of whom fell to there deaths. I always enjoy being able to see famous pieces of work in reality. These images are breathtaking and almost terrifying to look at, to know one wrong move by this worker would cause him to fall to the ground far below. Yet, there's also something quite peaceful about this photo due to the city looking so insignificant around him, like he is in his own world.
