When we look around us, look at the world, what we are seeing is reality. To sit down and create a life like painting of what we can see in a moment is realism, a depiction of life onto a canvas. But what I began to wonder is what is the purpose of this? Can't we achieve this with a photograph? Many of us can look at a realistic piece of work and be amazed at its life like qualities, which is clearly a talent, but what we are seeing isn't original, no unique qualities. So what makes it so good?
My first response to this would be, its an expression. Any photograph will hold memories or have an emotional effect on different people, but a painting has much more going on, and has been created under the influence of hundreds of little emotions or memories and feeling experience by the painter during the time. A realism painting will have so much more going on also, the tiny textures and paint strokes you'd be able to see up close.

Studio Liddell is a 3D design company in Manchester that work with lots of realism type images.
When it comes to 3D realism, what better way for an architecture to create a visualization of what they are planning to create with 3D realism. You really get to see What you are about to create, and get a feel of what a building will look like, making the correct changes before production.

Some people may think what the purpose of creating a 3D car when you could just as easily take a photograph. Well photo realism is fantastic for someone creating a new car concept, to really get the overall life like look of what they are to accomplice.

3D realism also allows to create object which could be too difficult to film. For example, these image of the Stella taps needs to be on a plane white background, but if shot with a camera on green screen, the reflections on the pipes would cause keying out the green to become more complicated.

The biggest purpose of realism though is it's role in fantasy. What big budget film would be as thrilling if it's artificial characters or locations didn't look as if they were real. It would kill the mood of the film. When you are watching a movie, you like to feel as if you are there, experiencing these situations.
